Caroline Wozniacki, former world number one in women’s tennis and one of the strongest athletes in recent times in WTA, expressed some doubts after the defeat of Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros. First and foremost, the Danish champion did not like the noon scheduling of the world number one: “I wonder how much the tournament’s desire to have a match with a French player on the Main Court in the evening, at peak time, weighed in this choice.”

“Maybe they did not imagine such a scenario either,” she told Eurosport. Why else would they place Zverev for two consecutive matches in the evening and not do the same with the number one as well?”

Some of Sinner’s choices also seemed strange to Wozniacki, such as the decision not to pause at the end of the fourth set: “The thing that surprised me the most is how come Sinner didn’t take a break after the fourth set he lost. He could have gone to the bathroom and cool off, get some ice and drink cold water. He stayed in the sun and kept playing. Also, his angle could have affected him more, he seemed demoralized. The whole thing seemed a little strange to me.”

Wozniacki recalled how difficult it is to play in extreme conditions, “I have been in a similar situation several times, of feeling so hot that you are overwhelmed by the heat, a strong sensation of heat in your head that pervades you, you can’t breathe anymore and you feel dizzy.”
