Cagliari market, a surprise name for the role of sporting director

While Fabio Pisacane is moving toward a much-deserved confirmation, the situation regarding the sporting director, on the other hand, needs to be clarified at Cagliari. A confrontation between President Giulini and Angelozzi, postponed at the end of last week, is expected this week to see if there are the conditions to continue together. In the meantime, the number one of the island club is also evaluating some alternatives: among the names on the table are Filippo Fusco, former Cesena and Juventus Under 23, Matteo Lovisa of Juve Stabia, Davide Vignati, former Torino, and somewhat surprisingly Davide Vaira, back from his experience at Pisa.

It is no coincidence that the choice of the new sporting director is considered so decisive: whoever will sit on Angelozzi’s chair – should the separation be consummated – will have to immediately face a summer market that is anything but simple. Cagliari finished the season in 14th place with 43 points, saved thanks in part to a victory on the last day against AC Milan at San Siro, but several of its jewels have already ended up in the sights of major clubs. President Giulini himself has publicly admitted that bids will come in for Caprile, Obert, Esposito, Adopo, and Mendy, hinting that some excellent disposals may be inevitable.

The hottest dossier is definitely the one related to Elia Caprile. The 2001-class goalkeeper has had a solid and steadily growing season, attracting the attentions of Juventus and Inter in Italy, but also foreign clubs such as Aston Villa and, according to rumors from France, PSG. The new sporting director will have to manage this situation with great skill, while finding a suitable replacement: in recent weeks the profile of Lorenzo Montipò, a five-year veteran of Hellas Verona and eager to stay in Serie A, has been raised, while the names of Wladimiro Falcone and Christos Mandas remain in the background.

Not only Caprile: another name that could leave Sardinia is that of Adam Obert. The young Slovak defender, author of an excellent season, has reportedly attracted the attentions of Hamburg, a club looking for a replacement for Luka Vuskovic. Whoever picks up Angelozzi’s legacy will therefore have to demonstrate negotiating skills and strategic vision from the outset in order not to dismantle a squad that, in Giulini’s own words, he would like to keep as intact as possible.
