The return of Marc Marquez to Mugello, after his forfeit in his home GP in Catalonia, had surprised more than one insider. Among them was former colleague Jorge Lorenzo, who, in an interview with Marca, had speculated about a return dictated by a specific goal: to get back in the race for the World Championship driven by a real obsession, that of overtaking Valentino Rossi by winning the tenth world title.

A strong reading, that of the Majorcan, which, however, Marquez firmly rejected. Speaking on the sidelines of the Italian Grand Prix weekend, the centaur from Cervera sharply overturned this narrative: “It’s true, I could have come back to Balaton Park, a less physically tiring track, but I would not have been the rider I know. I didn’t come back to win points for the title, I don’t care right now-I simply want to resume racing and extend my career.”

Marquez’s words immediately ignited debate among fans, especially on social media. On the one hand, those who support the Catalan’s version, seeing in his comeback an act of pride and sporting survival, on the other those who give credence to Lorenzo’s reading, convinced that the number 93 still has in mind the hunt for the tenth title and has decided to force a comeback in order not to see the distance from the leaders in the standings become wider and wider.

The result is a heated confrontation, between ironies, technical analysis and the inevitable comparisons with Rossi, to which Marquez is accustomed since the beginning of his career. As is often the case when talking about the Catalan, the discourse goes far beyond what happens on the track.
