French soccer is in mourning: Eric Roy, coach of Brest, died Wednesday at the age of 58 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. The news was announced by the coach’s family on social media. Roy, who had coached Nice during the 2010–2011 season, subsequently served as sporting director first at Lens and then at Watford, before returning to head coaching by accepting the challenge at Brest in 2023, leading the Breton club to the Champions League.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Eric,” his family stated on the coach’s Instagram account. “For three and a half years, he had been battling pancreatic cancer. Throughout this time, he continued to live with a strength that still amazes us today, sustained by the love of his family, soccer, his work, and that passion that never left him.”

“What he achieved in recent years will remain extraordinary to us,” the statement continued. “Facing such a battle while continuing to lead a club, a team, and such a rich history speaks volumes about the man he was. He was deeply kind, gentle, principled, and honest. He knew how to encourage, inspire, and push others to surpass themselves, to become the best versions of themselves. He possessed wisdom, precision, and humanity.”

“To the Brest fans, we want to say thank you. Your affection, your support, your passion, and your love touched him deeply. This strength sustained him far more than you can imagine,” concluded Eric Roy’s family in their heartfelt message.
