Roma Transfer News: His stint with the Argentine national team has, for now, come to a halt in 2024, thus preventing him from participating in the 2026 World Cup. Paulo Dybala, however, also took a summer vacation, which ended on Saturday with his return to the capital. Transfer rumors about “La Joya” continue to swirl, particularly those regarding a contract extension that seems to be taking forever. He himself, however, offered a few more clues right from the airport.

When journalists specifically asked him if he could already confirm the extension of his contract with Roma, Dybala cut them short: “No, not yet.” A response that might seem to dampen fan enthusiasm at first glance, but which in reality appears to stem solely from the Argentine forward’s caution. All parties involved seem to agree on continuing together, and even Gian Piero Gasperini intends to rely heavily on him ahead of the upcoming season after seeing him return to top form toward the end of last season. The player’s arrival in the capital itself is, in fact, confirmation that in a few days he will join his Giallorossi teammates to begin summer training with them.

This cautious optimism is borne out by developments over the past few weeks. According to recent reports, Dybala and Roma have reached an agreement to renew his contract at a salary of 3 million euros per season: a figure far below the 8 million he previously earned, but one that reflects a shared desire to continue together as part of an ambitious technical project. This agreement was by no means a foregone conclusion, considering that as recently as late June, the Argentine had made cryptic statements to ‘ESPN Argentina’ from Córdoba, leaving the door open to a possible departure: “I haven’t decided yet what I’ll do next season. Until the end of June, I’m a Roma player, and out of respect for my club, I’d prefer not to say anything else. Return to Argentina? Anything can happen, but right now there’s nothing concrete.”

The path to this renewal was long and winding. The groundwork for the deal had been laid with former sporting director Massara in the preceding weeks, but the process had then stalled while the club searched for his successor. The arrival of Tony D’Amico—Atalanta’s former sporting director, who is now reunited with Gasperini—marked a decisive turning point in the negotiations, bringing them back on track. Qualifying for the Champions League also marked a major turning point, finally convincing the Argentine to consider staying in the capital.

Gasperini, for his part, had never hidden his desire to keep the playmaker, publicly reiterating on several occasions: “Everyone wants him to stay at Roma.” With the Dybala issue now resolved, D’Amico can focus on other pending transfer matters. The main target to bolster the offense remains Mason Greenwood: new talks are expected between Roma and Marseille to finalize the deal, with the Giallorossi ready to put a total offer of around 45 million euros on the table, along with a five-year contract worth 5 million per season for the 2001-born former Manchester United player. In the background, the possibility of signing Christian Pulisic from Milan remains—considered a viable alternative but currently taking a back seat to the negotiations for the English winger.
