Mats Wilander Stands His Ground on Jannik Sinner, Dividing Fans

Among the many insiders who follow the world of tennis on a daily basis, former world No. 1 Mats Wilander is the one who is dividing fans the most when he talks about Jannik Sinner. Even before the Wimbledon semifinal, the Swede had predicted a victory for Novak Djokovic: after being proven wrong on the court, he still wanted to take a dig, mentioning the defeated finalist Alexander Zverev specifically in relation to the Italian player.
“The final offers a glimpse of progress; the gap is narrowing,” Wilander told L’Equipe. “Sascha seems destined to close the gap even further over the next twelve months. The fact that he managed to do so on grass—a surface that isn’t his favorite—is a strong sign. He’s a player with great qualities and could join Sinner and Alcaraz: they can’t remain out of reach forever.”
However, the results of the last ten head-to-head matches between Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev tell a story of total dominance by the South Tyrolean, regardless of the surface. In fact, since 2024, Sinner has never lost, defeating Zverev seven times on hard courts (Cincinnati 2024, Australian Open, Vienna, Paris Masters 1000 and the 2025 ATP Finals, Indian Wells and Miami in 2026) and twice on clay (Monte Carlo and Madrid in 2026), prior to Wimbledon.
Zverev’s last head-to-head victory dates back to 2023, when in the round of 16 at the US Open, the German won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. The overall head-to-head record between Sinner and Zverev stands at eleven wins for the Italian and four for the German.
