The wrestling world mourns the death of Bill Dundee

The wrestling world is mourning the passing of Bill Dundee, who died at the age of 83. Best known for his time in the National Wrestling Alliance, he won the Southern Heavyweight Title several times and also achieved significant success in tag-team matches with Buddy Landel.

““WWE is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Dundee, a former WCW wrestler and Memphis legend,” World Wrestling Entertainment wrote on X. Dundee was a regular presence on WCW programs, serving as William Regal’s manager, but his most enduring legacy lies in his career as a wrestler in the ring.”

“In addition to being a successful tag-team partner with ‘Nature Boy’ Buddy Landel, Dundee was a prominent rival of Jimmy Valiant and WWE Hall of Famer Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler, helping to elevate the Memphis wrestling scene to new heights. WWE extends its deepest condolences to Dundee’s family, friends, and fans.”

Dundee is also known for his rivalry with Tommy Gilbert, and his son, Doug Gilbert, paid tribute to his father’s former opponent: “Superstar Bill Dundee was exactly that: a SUPERSTAR, and there will never be another like him! My family has been fortunate enough to know Bill for as long as I can remember.”

“My father wrestled against Bill, Eddie (his brother—ed.) wrestled against Bill, and I’ve probably seen 100 of his matches over the years. We shared so much wrestling history and so many memories. We’ll certainly miss him, but thankfully, we still have all those memories. RIP.”
