A tragic situation for Monaco basketball: request for third-division registration denied

There’s no respite for AS Monaco. After being excluded from the Betclic Élite, the top division of French basketball, and from the Élite 2, the Principality’s club has suffered another major setback, as reported by L’Equipe. The federal office has in fact also rejected the club’s application for admission to Nationale 1, the third tier of French basketball.

The decision came on Saturday and was made following a negative recommendation from the Management Control Commission (CCG). Monaco had hoped to restart in Nationale 1 after being ousted from the top two divisions due to financial problems, but this possibility has now also fallen through.

The new decision is reportedly again rooted in difficulties related to the club’s financial situation. According to the Commission, ASM failed to submit sufficient documentation; the federal office therefore decided not to grant admission to the league.

This is a shocking turn of events, especially considering Monaco’s recent sporting history. The club has been crowned French champion three times, winning the title in 2023, 2024, and 2026. On the international stage, it also won the EuroCup in 2021 and reached the EuroLeague final in 2025.

From reigning French champion to facing the very real risk of being left without a national league to compete in next season. The situation has become increasingly precarious, and with the Nationale 1 set to begin next Friday, AS Monaco’s sporting future remains shrouded in uncertainty.
