Openda in Tears: Serious Injury for the Juventus-Owned Forward

Loïs Openda, a striker owned by Juventus and currently on loan to Lyon, ended his away game at Lens in tears. The Belgian was forced to leave the field in the 59th minute, escorted by medical staff, after a hard collision during play that caused a serious ankle injury.
Footage shows Openda on the ground, unable to get up on his own. The forward was then lifted and escorted by medical staff to the tunnel leading to the locker room, visibly in pain and in tears. His reaction raises fears of a serious injury, though the extent of the problem will not be known until the results of diagnostic tests are available.
The former Juventus player had started his adventure in France on an encouraging note, managing to regain the consistency that had been lacking during his time in Turin. Wearing the Lyon jersey under coach Paulo Fonseca, he has so far recorded 2 goals and 1 assist in 10 appearances—a significant improvement compared to the two goals he scored in 34 appearances with Juventus.
The transfer to Lyon took place last July through an agreement with Juventus based on a paid loan with an option to buy. The deal allowed Juventus to reduce its payroll and earn 3 million euros for the one-year loan.
The start of this new chapter seemed to have restored the Belgian striker’s confidence after a disappointing season at Continassa. His performances in France had fueled hopes of a comeback, but the ankle injury now risks bringing his progress to an abrupt halt.
Openda’s condition will be assessed in the coming hours through medical examinations. Only after the exams will it be possible to determine the nature of the injury and estimate the recovery time. For Lyon—and for the striker himself—there remains concern over an incident that could become yet another obstacle in his attempt to regain consistency and form.
