The Sprint Race at the Qatar Grand Prix has reignited tensions in the MotoGP paddock, sparking a flurry of reactions from Italian fans on social media. Marc Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer found themselves at the center of the storm due to their respective incidents with Marco Bezzecchi and Pecco Bagnaia in Saturday’s sprint race at the Lusail Circuit.

Marquez celebrated his Sprint victory without having to worry about penalties, as the Steward Panel ruled that his contact with Bezzecchi was a racing incident not warranting a penalty. Aldeguer, on the other hand, was found responsible for the crash that forced Bagnaia to visit the medical center, where he was diagnosed with fractures in two toes on his right foot that will prevent him from taking to the track on Sunday: the Spanish Gresini Racing rider will have to serve a double “long lap penalty” in Sunday’s race.

The race commissioners’ decisions have sparked outrage online, with many calling the decision not to penalize Marquez unfair and the penalty imposed on Aldeguer too lenient. “Absurd decisions,” reads one of the most-liked comments under posts in Italian MotoGP communities: “Marquez sends Bezzecchi into the gravel and the race officials think it’s all normal; Aldeguer takes out Bagnaia and can still race on Sunday. A disgrace.”

“Bagnaia was taken down, sustained damage, and is forced to sit out the rest of the weekend—and the consequence for the person who caused all this is just a double long lap? It’s a ridiculous and completely insufficient penalty,” reads another comment regarding Aldeguer’s punishment. “Marquez keeps doing whatever he wants on the track, as if he were untouchable,” writes another fan. “Meanwhile, we keep seeing extremely dangerous maneuvers punished with the bare minimum. This isn’t justice.”

“Race management that’s scandalous, to say the least. One rider knocks his rival for first place off the bike and isn’t penalized; another sends a rider home because of a reckless move and isn’t suspended. Zero consistency,” thunders another Instagram user, furious over what happened on Saturday.
