Gino Mäder died after crashing in the Tour of Switzerland
Gino Mäder has died. On Thursday the rider fell down the steep descent of the Albulapass in the finale of stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse and ended up in a cliff. Help was immediate, but there was nothing to be done for Mader: he passed away on Friday morning.
“It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder,” Bahrain Victorious wrote. Gino lost his battle to recover from his serious injuries. Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones at this very difficult time. Following the high-speed crash that occurred during the final descent of Thursday’s stage, the 26-year-old was resuscitated at the scene by medical personnel who also performed CPR before being airlifted to the hospital.”
“Despite the best efforts of the Chur hospital staff, Gino did not make it through his last and greatest challenge: at 11:30 a.m. one of our team’s shining lights went out. Gino was an extraordinary athlete, an example of determination, a valuable member of our team and the entire cycling community. His talent, dedication and passion for the sport inspired us all. Gino, thank you for the light, joy and laughter you brought to us all, we will miss you as a cyclist and as a person. Today and every day we will ride for you, Gino,” the note concludes.
Mäder’s most important successes were stage six of the 2021 Giro d’Italia, the Grotte di Frasassi-Ascoli Piceno, and stage eight of the Tour of Switzerland that same year, from Andermatt to Andermatt, and also two years ago he was the best young rider in the Vuelta a Espana, in which he finished fifth.
