ATP Finals, Alexander Zverev speaks out about his ankle condition
Alexander Zverev appeases everyone
On the sidelines of his comeback victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the first match of the Red Group of the ATP Finals in Turin, Alexander Zverev wanted to calm fans and insiders about the condition of his ankle, which was put to the test by a slip on the concrete at the Pala Alpitour. For a few seconds, many saw again the specters of what happened in Roland Garros 2022, when the German ruptured ligaments in his right ankle and was forced to undergo surgery.
"It was just a slip, no big deal,‖ Zverev told the microphones of 'Sky Sports' -I felt a little bit of pain but it è lasted a few minutes and no more. It è not even comparable to what happened to me last year in Paris. No damage, in short".
Overcoming the scare, Zverev maintained the mental solidity needed to complete the comeback and win 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4: "Beating the best in the world è nice – said the German. Carlos è among the best. And then the atmosphere here è beautiful, è it was a great victory".
Zverev thus started with a success on his way to the ATP Finals, already putting Alcaraz in trouble, who cannot make any more mistakes if he wants to qualify for the semifinals. Rounding out the Red Group are però two decidedly level-headed opponents: Daniil Medvedev, very strong on concrete, and Andrey Rublev, a finalist beaten by Hurkacz in Shanghai and a semifinalist in Vienna (defeated by Jannik Sinner) and Paris-Bercy (ko against Novak Djokovic).
