Euro 2024, Italy: how many doubts for the challenge with Switzerland
Few certainties of formation for national team coach
Italy will challenge Switzerland for a place in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals in Berlin on Saturday (6 p.m.). After clinching qualification (from second in the group) at the last gasp, the national team is called upon to change pace and, probably, to change the starting lineup as well, also because of Calafiori’s disqualification that complicates, even more, Spalletti’s plans.
At the moment, there are few certainties in the blue house. They can be counted on one hand, namely Donnarumma, the team's true top player, Bastoni, Barella, Chiesa (if he enters the field with the right attitude) and Zaccagni, gassed by the goal to Croatia that made him immortal in the history of Azzurri soccer.
Otherwise, plenty of doubts for the coach, who is called upon to make choices that are certainly not easy. In defense, for example, there's a choice to be made between Mancini and Buongiorno. One of the two will take the place of the disqualified Calafiori. In midfield, Fagioli is pawing to play from the start, as is the other midfielder Cristante (Jorginho could rest after playing all three matches of the round).
All to be invented the blue attack. Scamacca and Retegui have not scored a single goal in the first three matches of the round, confirming how the offensive department is the one most in trouble at the moment. Raspadori, moreover, has not fully convinced, difficult to see him on the field from the first minute. These days, Spalletti will have to make some complicated decisions. With Switzerland, the national team that did not allow us to play the World Cup in Qatar, we must not make mistakes.
