A new era is opening for the top motorcycling championship, as much for prototypes as for series derivatives. Liberty Media, which already holds the rights to Formula 1, will in fact permanently acquire 84 percent of Dorna Sports, which instead holds the rights to MotoGp and Superbike (and related classes), while MotoGp management itself, represented by Carmelo Ezpeleta, will retain the remaining 16 percent of the business.

The deal, as disclosed by Dorna itself, was approved on Monday by the European Commission, while the final date for closing the deal was set for July 3. “We are very happy with the approval of the transaction by the European Commission – commented Carmelo Ezpeleta -This is an important milestone that confirms that an even brighter future awaits us”.

“MotoGp is one of the most compelling sports on Earth, and we look forward to accelerating the growth of the sport and reaching even more fans around the world– added the CEO of Dorna Sports.”

Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire community, and we are excited to create even more value for our fans, business partners, and everyone who takes to the track”.

Derek Chang, President and CEO of Liberty Media, in turn commented: “MotoGp represents a top-tier, highly attractive sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase and significant cash flow. We believe the sport and the brand present significant growth potential that we aim to make a reality through deep connection with the fan base and expansion to a totally global audience”.
