Lorenzo Bonicelli awakened from medically induced coma

Lorenzo Bonicelli has been awakened from a medically induced coma and has shown positive signs. The condition of the blue athlete, who fell during ring exercise at the Universiade in Essen and underwent surgery on his neck, is stable, the Federginnastica announced. Bonicelli is in intensive care. His family is with him and his teammates visited him and were able to say goodbye.

The blue artistic gymnastics athlete fell during the rings exercise at the ongoing Universiade in Essen, Germany. The 23-year-old from Lecco, who came out badly in the third rotation of his exercise, was rescued by the organization&#8217s medical team and FISU and CUSI health officials before being transported to the nearby University Hospital where he underwent neck surgery.

The medical team was able to help him.

The technical staff accompanying the university national team after the shock “given the understandable emotional involvement of the rest of the team” decided to withdraw the team from the competition. While waiting for the medical bulletins that have not been issued, the’former director of the international federation, Steve Butcher on social would give some details: “Lorenzo is in a medically induced coma after surgery (on the cervical vertebrae). It will take at least ten days to know his condition”.

Bonicelli is currently “in intensive care, but his life is not in danger”. This was confirmed to ANSA by the Essen University Polyclinic, where the blue gymnast is hospitalized. For Bonicelli, the same medical sources point out, a rehabilitation course is planned to take place in Italy. The athlete&#8217s family is in these hours at his side in the hospital facility.
