Matthias Verreth, one-year-old son dies: Bari closes training camp

A terrible piece of news has deeply shaken Bari, so much so that it led the biancorossi to close their training camp that was under way in Roccaraso. Matthias Verreth, a 27-year-old midfielder who has just arrived in Puglia after his experience at Brescia, has in fact had to cope with the terrible grief of the passing away of a son just one year old.
As reconstructed by ‘Sky Sport‘, Verreth learned the news while having lunch with other Bari players. At that point he was immediately taken to Fiumicino airport to return home to Belgium to be reunited with his wife and his other daughter, who is 3 years old. The reasons for the death of the barely 1-year-old have not been disclosed.
“We have no words in communicating a news that just now has deeply shocked each of us – reads an official Bari note.”
President Luigi De Laurentiis, the technical staff, the entire team, the management and the biancorossi collaborators all embrace Matthias Verreth and his family in one of the most terrible moments that a parent and a human being can experience: the sudden death of a child”.
“We ask all fans and supporters to ideally and emotionally embrace Matthias, his wife, their first-born daughter and all their loved ones at this time of terrible grief. The biancorosso team will return to Bari today as a sign of mourning and respect towards a tragedy like this”, the Apulian club added.
