Memorable feat for Cameron Young, who anointed himself with a historic victory at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. In fact, the 28-year-old from Briarcliff Manor (New York) became the 1,000th player to win a PGA Tour tournament, finally breaking a long fast after seven runner-up finishes. In his 94th event on the circuit, Young dominated the Sedgefield Country Club (par 70), finishing with an impressive -22 (258 strokes: 63 62 65 68), edging out compatriot Mac Meissner, second at -16, by a full six lengths. Third place was co-hosted by Mark Hubbard of the United States and Alex Noren of Sweden, both at -15.

In the last round of the regular season, Matteo Manassero’s run, on the other hand, came to a halt at the cut: the Italian golfer, 76th with 138 (-2), had shined in the first round with a 65 (-5), topped by an eagle and four birdies, before running into a more difficult second round.

“I had been waiting for this moment for a long time. I didn’t think it could excite me so much. I had the chance and this time I couldn”t pass it up,” said an excited Young. In the final round, after an uphill start with a bogey, he posted five consecutive birdies, then conceded two bogeys in the final round, by then a sure victory.

With this success, Young becomes the 12th player to achieve his first victory of the season on the PGA Tour and rises to 16th place in the FedEx Cup standings. Thanks to the triumph, he earned $1,476,000 out of a total prize pool of $8,200,000 and climbed the world ranking from 44th to 21st. He now awaits the FedEx St. Jude Championship, scheduled for Aug. 7-10 in Memphis, Tennessee, the first of three Playoffs events.
