Carlos Alcaraz demolished by Taylor Fritz: "I couldn’t see the ball"

Even Carlos Alcaraz is human: The Murcia outfielder, fresh off winning the U.S. Open after a cleanly won final against Jannik Sinner, was routed by Taylor Fritz in one of the Rod Laver Cup singles matches. The Spanish world number one clearly succumbed 6-3, 6-2: “Fritz was more motivated than me on the court. You have to see everything, and I was not seeing the ball very well. I had the impression that I was too far away, that I was not in the right position, in the right place, which is sometimes annoying. I needed more time to adjust to the field”.

“The fact that we only have one field makes it quite difficult for teams to practice as they wish before matches, but that is no excuse. What’did I do after the US Open? I went four days without touching a racquet. Then I started a little bit again’ playing again, feeling the ball”.

Fritz in the press conference was very satisfied: “I didn&#8217t win because of his demerit, but because in the decisive moments I made the difference. I played an incredible match from start to finish, and I went for it. The thing I did best today, and which I lacked in the past against top players, was to really trust in the important points, to take the initiative without fear”.
