Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, it’s not over: the Englishman returns to the'attack

Kimi Antonelli and George Russell swapping their respective positions several times to try to overtake Oliver Bearman and fend off the return of Oscar Piastri was one of the themes of last Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix. Especially since, due to the double swapping of positions, not only did the two Mercedes finish the race behind both rivals with whom they were battling. In fact, the team’s intricate strategy also resulted in Ferrari overtaking them in the constructors’ championship. Yet the British driver insists on his line.
“In those laps I had a very good pace, I would have had a chance to attack Bearman since he was without DRS – reiterated Russell to the microphones of his compatriots at ‘Sky Sports UK’ -. Instead, staying behind Kimi, I got caught in a DRS train and I was stuck there for 10 laps”. From there, as anyone who watched the race could see, began his complaints over the radio to the Mercedes pits that lasted for numerous laps of the Mexican Grand Prix.
Russell, moreover, also objected to the Mercedes wall’s decision to allow him to overtake Antonelli. Although it was a matter of pandering to his request, in fact, the Englishman is convinced that it came too late to prove effective.
“At that point I found myself with overheated tires, engine and brakes. At that point there was no reason to do the swap positions. These are operations that have to be done right away, or not done at all. And the way we handled the situation, we deserve to have finished the race in the position we’ve finished it” concluded Russell. And the feeling is that the case is far from over at Mercedes.
