Former Belgian player and coach Glen De Boeck has died in Antwerp. The 54-year-old had suffered a brain hemorrhage on Friday and was then hospitalized in a deep coma.

After his professional beginnings at Malines (1992-1995), he had moved to Anderlecht, where he played until his retirement in 2005. In the white-and-white jersey he won three league titles and wore the captain’s armband. De Boeck was also part of the national team’s defense: with the Red Devils he accumulated 35 appearances and 1 goal between 1993 and 2002.

After the retirement he was forced into due to a series of knee problems, he had become coach of Cercle Bruges (2007-2010) and then of Kortrijk (2017-2018 and a few months in 2023), even reaching a Belgian Cup semifinal.

The Belgian Football Federation recalled in a statement “his exemplary mentality, his sense of position, and his leadership,” adding that “his teammates often praised his team spirit and his ability to strengthen group cohesion.”
