At the end of a real marathon (five hours and 26 minutes of play), Carlos Alcaraz managed to beat Alexander Zverev in the semifinals of the Australian Open. The German recovered from 0-2 down, taking the match to the fifth set where he also served for victory at 5-4. The Spaniard had the strength to fight back, closing 7-5. These are the match’s partials: 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5. To highlight how, starting from the third set, the Spaniard, number 1 seed on the scoreboard, had to deal with a physical problem (cramps, exactly as it happened to Jannik Sinner).

The Spaniard, in fact, in the third set of the match with a place in the Australian Open final at stake, started experiencing physical problems, so much so that he called medical time-out. Visibly fatigued, the Spaniard, number 1 in the world, thus lost the third partial (at tie-break), showing a decidedly reduced mobility. Especially in lateral movements, the number 1 on the men’s scoreboard appeared completely immobile, so much so that there were thoughts of possible withdrawal.

Returning to a good level of physical condition, Carlos Alcaraz put everything he had on the court but found in front of him an extraordinary Alexander Zverev who managed not to get caught up in the emotion and with quality, answered, blow by blow, the attempts of the world number 1 to make him capitulate. Decisive in the fate of the match was the break at 5-4 on Alexander Zverev’s serve that then launched the Spaniard to victory. A very tough match.

Carlos Alcaraz celebrates for winning his first final at the Australian Open (his fourth consecutive final in the trials of a Slam). A final reached with determination. The semifinal against Alexander Zverev certified how the Spaniard, even when he goes down, has special resources to fight back.

Bitter Alexander Zverev who goes within a whisker of what would be his fourth Slam final, his second at the Australian Open. Last year, in fact, he had been beaten, in the final, by Jannik Sinner. The performance remains, truly outstanding.
