Carlo Alcaraz, for the first time in his career, has won the final at the Australian Open. He did it by beating, at the end of a real marathon, lasting five hours and 26 minutes, German Alexander Zverev in five sets. It was a very special victory, not least because the Spaniard, number 1 on the scoreboard, had to contend during the third set with cramps, exactly as happened to Jannik Sinner in his match with Eliot Spizzirri.

“You have to believe, always believe. You have to keep fighting. In the middle of the third set, physically it was complicated. It was one of the toughest matches I have played, maybe the toughest ever. I had experienced this kind of problem before, I would say I put my heart into it. I knew I had to fight until the last ball. I knew the problem could pass me by. I am very proud of what I did”, the Spaniard’s words at the end of the match.

The world No. 1 also thanked the crowd, which, when the match went uphill, was completely behind the Spaniard: “I am really happy for this first final, I have been chasing it for a long time. It was the personal goal of these two weeks. Nice to be in this situation, in this stadium with these incredible fans. You brought me back, you encouraged me. I am grateful for your support”, explained the Spaniard.

Physically exhausted, Carlos Alcaraz then said that, now, he only needs to recover to be ready for Sunday’s final. Should he win, he would become the youngest tennis player ever to win all four Grand Slam events.

At the eighth final of a Slam event, Carlos Alcaraz is one win away from entering even more legend. The energy expended in the semifinal against Alexander Zverev was numerous, but Carlos Alcaraz proved to have endless resources.
