At the age of 87, Coach Doug Moe passed away. The news of his death was given by his son David. The father had been struggling, for some time, with cancer. He was, for so many years, a key figure in the NBA world. One of the most eccentric coaches ever seen on an NBA parquet. His style was unique, as was his approach to basketball. As a player, he wore the Petrarca Padua jersey (from 1965 to 1967).

Doug Moe had an overall record of 628 wins and 529 losses in 15 seasons as an NBA head coach, including stints at the helm of the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers. He never won a title: his most memorable run was in 1985, when, as leader of the Denver Nuggets, he was defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals. He was named NBA Coach of the Year in 1988.

His style distinguished the’NBA of the ’80s. He loved to have his teams play on the offensive end. A hyper offensive game in which the’goal was to score a basket more than the opponents. He always dressed colorfully, avoiding as much as possible the’use of ties on the bench, not sparing the’use of profanity in his dialogues, even with the media. Direct, unique, out of the ordinary but gifted with great basketball intelligence and skilled in the’art of entertaining fans with his electrifying play.

The Denver Nuggets, in a social media post, called their former coach Doug Moe, who led them to 432 wins, “…a one-of-a-kind leader and person who guided one of the most successful and exciting decades in Nuggets&#8221 history.

Symbol of an’NBA that is no more, he was always beloved by fans of the franchises he coached, partly because he could be found, after the game, in any bar talking, of course, about basketball. Obviously, in his own way.
