F1, Mercedes: a former driver compares Russell to Rosberg and warns Lewis Hamilton
Hamilton and Russel have yet to win a race, with four GPs left in the season
Former British racing driver John Watson, who raced in Formula 1 between 1973 and 1985 with Lotus and McLaren among others, in an interview with ‘Planetf1.com’ microphones, focused on the situation of Mercedes, which has still failed to win a Grand Prix, with four races left in the season.
Watson wanted to give confidence to the British team, “I think Mercedes will win a Grand Prix at some point. I don’t know if it will be one or more races, but I feel the team has the ability. Within their structure, however, they are losing key people who are very difficult to replace. There are people who are growing within the company who will be happy to have these opportunities. So this is a transition phase for Mercedes. Also, they have opted for a particularly radical interpretation of the regulations-they have been hit hard by porpoising and other issues. So I think Mercedes will win one race, although God knows whether it will be more than one or whether it will be Hamilton or Russell.”
The former driver concluded with a ‘warning’ for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton: “I think Lewis is fully aware that Russell is his biggest internal challenge since 2016 with Nico Rosberg.”
