The words of Mattia Binotto

Mattia Binotto, in the eye of the storm after new strategy errors cost him dearly in Hungary, tried to justify himself to the microphones of Sky Sport F1.

“I think we all expected a different result. Us first. Basically today the car did not work. It didn’t work as we hoped. I hear about strategies, about the hard tire, but the basic problem in my opinion was a car that didn’t go for what it needed to go today. Carlos did the same strategy as Hamilton, but Lewis finished second with Sainz fourth starting in front of him. Today the car with these conditions did not run. You can put the tires you want, if the car doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. If the car had been there today we wouldn’t be here talking about tires.”

“With 30 laps to go one tries to hold the position and go to the end with the long stint and it didn’t work today. But basically the car didn’t work. It didn’t give us the breathing room to do what we wanted to do. Carlos is the example. Even before we analyze the strategy we will analyze why car did not have the right pace. It did not work as we saw it in the beginning of the season. This is the first time it is not fast enough on the race pace. Basically there is this. This we have to analyze. Something did not work correctly. I am not saying that the choice of white today was right. It was the wrong one. I am saying, however, that the performance of the car is to be researched. We will analyze everything, including the strategies and why we didn’t decide to extend and stay out. Then in the end with the reds we didn’t even catch up with Perez. Basically there is a performance problem. There I put the emphasis for the priority of our analysis.”
