Davis Cup, even Fish crowns Sonego: “The best of all.”
Fish’s words after the loss to Italy
U.S. captain Mardy Fish appeared at a press conference with Jack Sock and Tommy Paul, who were defeated by the Fognini-Bolelli pair, to comment on his team’s defeat, giving credit to the Azzurri.
“The Italians played very well the singles matches were both drawn, but Italy overall deserved to win. Sonego maybe was the best of all,” admitted Fish. “Frances did not demerit but Sonego played very well today. We really cared about winning, losing sucks (it stinks). If anyone cares about winning Davis it’s me. In 2004 I was there and we stopped in the final against Spain and it still stings.”
“I answer again this question that you have already asked me an incredible number of times. We have a large number of good players in the US. But the decision is mine. I take the blame and the players take the credit. Rajeev played well a few times with Jack, Jack and Frances are also a very good doubles player. But I had decided that I would not play with Rajeev and that was it. In the end Italy played better and that’s the most important thing,” he explained about the choice not to call Ram.
“These guys are the present and the future, they will play a lot in the years to come. It is not simply a question of ranking. For me it’s also about how the kids react to being on the team or not. The choices I have made are not random. At the level of team building for me for example it is impressive that Berrettini is with the Italian team even if he is not playing and that is the kind of thing I try to build,” concluded the U.S. captain.
