Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone working toward St. Moritz
Two downhill runs and a super-giant over the weekend
There are also the two “Fisi 2022 Athletes of the Year,” Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone, among the nine summoned for this weekend’s races in St. Moritz. Two free downhill races, Friday, Dec. 16 and Saturday, Dec. 17, and a super-giant, Sunday, Dec. 18, will be run on the Swiss snow.
Sofia Goggia will defend, in the downhill, the red bib she has worn continuously for two calendar years. Along with her, in addition to Federica Brignone, will be Marta Bassino, Nadia and Nicol Delago, Laura Pirovano, Elena Curtoni, Roberta Melesi and Karoline Pichler.
The slopes of St. Moritz have brought several satisfactions to the women’s Italian team, with five overall successes, most recently achieved by Federica Brignone, ahead of Elena Curtoni, in last year’s second super-giant (Goggia second in the one the day before). In 2019, Goggia herself won the Super-G ahead of Brignone, while Elena Curtoni took the bottom step of the podium in 2016.
The other victories, however, are Nadia Fanchini’s in Super-G in 2008, Karen Putzer’s two, also in Super-G, in 1999 and 2001, and Isolde Kostner’s in downhill again in 1999.
