Lewis Hamilton on “his” Hungaroring, his words

Lewis Hamilton is confident about Mercedes’ chances in the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring circuit, where the seven-time world champion has won eight times (2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020), as he did at Silverstone and as Michael Schumacher did at Magny-Cours: one of the many records he holds, either solo or, as in this case, in co-ownership. Here are the words of the 38-year-old Briton in the press conference on the eve of the Magyar three-day event, quotes are reported by formulapassion.it.

“I always try to rely on my driving ability to make up the deficit. But in the end it was not enough at many circuits. But this has been a good circuit for me in the past, and I think last year it confirmed that it suited us (Lewis finished second and his teammate George Russell third, ed.). Since it is a medium- and low-speed circuit, I hope we will be closer. But I heard that Red Bull might have an upgrade package for this weekend as well. So we will have to see how that will affect performance.”

“It takes time to build things up. James Allison is great, we have a great relationship and he knows when to be tough. He’s never been soft, actually. We had a very good meeting the other day where all the department heads were there, George and I, and we made sure we were on the same page. We have 100 percent confidence in them. And I believe that as a group, as a whole, we will get where we need to be.”

“The thing we can’t see is the airflow throughout the car. In the wind tunnel there is a certain amount of movement of the car. There are simulations with the new rules we have, there are all the new tools we had to create to understand the flow of the structures under the car. The vortices are incredible if you see what’s happening under the car. And it is very different from what was happening before. Working on this takes time and also resources are very limited. You have to be careful about the decisions you make. You have to be very methodical in following this process otherwise you can lose weeks of development and tenths of performance. I wish the path was faster, but unfortunately it is not.”
