Martina Fidanza, bad fall and goodbye podium
World Cycling Championships, results
A nasty crash involving Martina Fidanza with nine laps to go did not allow the pair formed by Fidanza herself and Chiara Consonni to evenly play for a chance at the podium with the last sprint. Up to that point, the two blues had collected 14 points and were traveling in fourth position, five points behind second place.
Martina, in the midst of a tussle for the leading positions, saw a Dutchwoman fall in front and was unable to avoid her. As the race was neutralized the Italian passed into the infirmary (in the end nothing particularly serious) and could not resume. The last laps, therefore, Chiara Consonni faced them alone, but she could not keep up with her opponents’ pace. “We were hoping for a medal and from the way the race had turned out it was within our reach. Too bad. The important thing is that Martina didn’t get hurt,” Consonni commented. For them fifth place in the race won by the British pair.
It closes the rainbow review of Miriam Vece, engaged today in the Sprint. The Italian passed the qualification with the 22nd time but stopped in the 16th final in the duel with Canadian Kelsey Mitchell. Vece’s words, “I was hoping for a different world championship. Today I tried, it was not easy against an athlete of that level, an Olympic specialty champion. Despite not passing I can be satisfied with my performance.”
Andrea Tarlao comes close to a medal in the Omnium C5. After his seventh place in the 200m today, the Italian comes in at 128 points, tied with Brazil’s Lauro Chaman, who took bronze for the best finish in the Scratch (3rd Chaman, 5th Tarlao). Seventh place in the Sprint for the men’s tandem Federico Meroni – Francesco Ceci
Double silver for Claudia Cretti in the C5 scratch and Omnium. Race conducted always in control, the Italian let slip the Australian Murray with two laps to go. For Claudia these are the second and third medals at these world championships after Saturday’s bronze.
