He passed away at the age of 85 in Rivoli, in the province of Turin, Marcello Gandini, a highly appreciated designer who linked his name above all to the world of sports cars, designing models of great prestige: in this sense è remembered by all is his experience in the Centro Stile Bertone, of which he was chief designer succeeding Giorgetto Giugiaro.
Marcello Gandini, a long personal history related to car-design
Concerned with design from a young age, Marcello Gandini began in interior design and then went on to car design, first at Bertone, eventually becoming its Style Director and working on models that entered history such as Lamborghini Miura, Ferrari Dino, Lancia Stratos and many others.
Further on, as an independent designer, he collaborated with various car manufacturers in Italy as well as in Europe and the rest of the world: his collaborations with Lamborghini, Maserati, Renault, Nissan, Toyota and Subaru among others are remembered. Its efforts over the years have been increasingly focused on research and innovation, with the specific goal of reinventing the way an automobile is produced, resulting in a series of patents and inventions from this continuous research.
Honorary Degree awarded in January his last living recognition
Only a few weeks ago, on Jan. 12, 2024, Marcello Gandini had been awarded an Honorary Degree in Mechanical Engineering by the Politecnico di Torino, which had wanted to reward him precisely for his ability to combine mechanics, technology and style over the course of his long professional activity.
Gandini will be remembered for his engineering approach that allowed him to achieve the best possible result at the level of form, function, research of novel materials, with an eye always turned to’innovation and the ability to find original mechanical solutions to incorporate mechanical components into his creations.
