Lorenzo Sonego, three hours of struggle not enough: Humbert passes in Monte Carlo
After almost three hours comes a very bitter defeat.
Lorenzo Sonego leaves the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in the round of 16, defeated in three sets by Frenchman Ugo Humbert (No. 15 in the ATP world rankings) after even dreaming of the feat. After winning an extremely throbbing first set, però, the Turinese player succumbed over the distance: the final score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 certifies it. And the regrets are mainly for what happened in the second partial.
The first set è as mentioned open, with the two opponents trying to impose themselves with their respective qualities but unable to prevail one over the other. This is evidenced by the first game, which Humbert won after a full 12 points. The balance remains unchanged until as late as the 11th game, when Sonego finally snatches the break from the Frenchman and makes the decisive breakthrough to win the set.
A break that Sonego also tries to build in the next set, a mission failed once in the third game and even five in the fifth. Bravo the Frenchman to take advantage of this by capitalizing in the eighth, when he capitalizes the fourth break ball and his match becomes downhill. This was clearly understood in the decisive set, which lasted more than three quarters of an hour but in which the Blue managed to bring home only the third game.
