Frances Tiafoe goes against the grain on Jannik Sinner and ignites discussion

Jannik Sinner has just won his sixth consecutive Masters 1000, dominated Rome as the outright number one, and comes into Roland Garros as a must-win favorite, also aided by Carlos Alcaraz’s absence due to injury. The dominant narrative is clear: the others can only chase, almost as if they were extras in a tournament that seems already addressed. Not everyone, however, agrees, and Frances Tiafoe decided, speaking to reporters in Paris, to put forward another point of view.

“He is an extraordinary player, that is beyond question,” said the American. “But I will not be the one to add myself to those who put him on a pedestal. We players must first of all convince ourselves that beating him is possible: right now we are helping to create an aura around him, and that also weighs. Sure, he is expressing himself at a higher level, however, the best on the circuit have the qualities to compete with him. The real challenge is to break this mental barrier.”

Tiafoe’s words immediately ignited discussion: there are those who read them as an attempt by the current number 21 in the world to put pressure on the Alto Adige player and try, indirectly, to put himself forward as an outsider, and those who instead interpret them as a necessary, almost salutary message to prevent the circuit from surrendering to what to many seems inevitable.

What is certain is that the numbers are all on Sinner’s side: victories in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, and Rome speak for themselves, as do the twenty-eight consecutive wins as part of the five Masters 1000s won in 2026, leaving just three sets on the road. And these are just some of the statistics that are fueling the legend of the Blue, whose goal in Paris is to cement it further.
