Jannik Sinner, backstory revealed: clear words from Darren Cahill

How do you manage an increasingly busy tennis season, what’s more, reaching the bottom in virtually every tournament played? This was explained, in no uncertain terms, by Darren Cahill, Jannik Sinner’s Australian supercoach, revealing a behind-the-scenes story in the latest video posted on the Italian outfielder’s YouTube channel, in which he chose to tell fans about the behind-the-scenes story of his triumphant participation in the Internazionali d’Italia, which he won in the May 17 final against Casper Ruud.
“It was a completely new situation for us, because we had never been with a player capable of getting this far in every Masters 1000 played,” Cahill admitted. “Therefore, getting to Rome required a different approach than usual. Immediately after the Madrid final, we decided to give Jannik three full days of rest: an unusual choice for him, who hates to disconnect from tennis, so much so that we practically had to force him to put his rackets away and not think about the court.”
“During those days we played some golf and kicked the ball around a bit, really trying to clear his mind and let his body recover. It worked: when he returned to the court, he not only missed tennis after three days, but he was also excited to be able to play here in Italy,” further explained the Australian coach who, in his career, is also known for guiding Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi, but has also followed people like Andy Murray, Ana Ivanovic or Simona Halep at different times.
Even after the tournament in Rome, Jannik Sinner wanted to get away for a couple of days, this time choosing to return to his native Sesto Pusteria to spend some time with his family. The mayor of the South Tyrolean town himself, Thomas Summerer, had said he was proud of the town idol’s return home, guaranteeing peace of mind to allow him to recharge his batteries ahead of Paris.
