F1: The FIA overturns the decision; Pierre Gasly wins his appeal and takes the podium at the Monaco Grand Prix

Unbelievable but true. Five days after the end of the Monaco GP, the FIA has lifted all penalties against Pierre Gasly, who suddenly finds himself celebrating his third-place finish in Monte Carlo.

Specifically, in an official statement, the FIA admitted to an error in measuring the speed at the pit lane entrance, which was the reason for the penalties imposed on Pierre Gasly (two five-second penalties). Other drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, were also victims of the same error but, unlike the Alpine driver, served their penalties during the race; furthermore, their respective teams did not file any appeals, unlike Flavio Briatore’s team.

As the statement indicates, speeds reported at the pit lane entrance as exceeding 60 km/h (the established speed limit) were, in reality, within the permitted limits, specifically at a speed of approximately 58.7 km/h. Alpine’s appeal helped clarify a very sensitive and contentious issue that was also debated after the race.

Isack Hadjar is left with a bitter taste. The Red Bull driver had, in fact, celebrated a third-place finish that no longer belongs to him (he has slipped to fourth place overall).
