Wimbledon: Flavio Cobolli and Mariano Navone Forced to Stop Play; Resumption Scheduled

The first-round match between Flavio Cobolli and Argentina’s Mariano Navone at Wimbledon 2026 did not finish in time on Tuesday evening. The match, played on Court 2 at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, was suspended with the Italian leading two sets to one—1-6, 7-6(5), 6-3—due to darkness.
At 8:55 p.m. local time (9:55 p.m. in Italy), with the sun already set and no possibility of using a roof or artificial lighting (Court 2 does not have a roof), the match officials decided to suspend the match. Visibility was no longer sufficient to ensure adequate playing conditions.
Cobolli, in his first Grand Slam match since the Roland Garros final, had managed to turn around a match that had started poorly: a complicated first set, a comeback in the second-set tiebreak, and a third set played with authority. The Roman will need to stay focused on Wednesday morning so as not to lose the ground he gained on Tuesday evening.
The match will resume on July 1, again on Court 2, no earlier than 1:30 p.m. Italian time. As announced in the updated draw, their match will be the second match of the day, following the second-round women’s singles match between Naomi Osaka and Anastasija Gasanova, scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Italian time.
