Wimbledon: Jannik Sinner Goes Beyond Tennis—The Italian Player’s Remark Makes the Crowd Smile, and Carlos Alcaraz Is Mentioned, Too

After breaking the resistance of Portugal’s Nuno Borges in three hard-fought sets, Jannik Sinner continues his run at Wimbledon, earning a spot in the third round where he will face a player who, unlike Kecmanovic and Borges, is outside the Top 50: American Jenson Brooksby, who easily defeated first Aleksandar Vukic and then Ignacio Buse.
Speaking to tournament organizers in the traditional post-match interview, Sinner didn’t mince words: “I’m happy with the result; it wasn’t an easy match, and the second set, in particular, was very tough. In the first two sets, we both served very well, and when that happens, it’s not easy to maintain much control over the match. Two wins are already a good starting point; now let’s see what happens next: we need to work on a couple of things.”
The Italian star admitted he had some trouble shaking off the rust from his month-long break from competition following Roland Garros: “Especially in the first match, I really felt the lack of match practice,” he explained. “But facing these challenges helped me shake off that rust right away. Now I’ll take advantage of the day off, and then we’ll see how things go.”
Finally, there was a moment when Sinner showed a bit more lightheartedness, when he was asked if he had noticed the golfers competing in the prestigious Ryder Cup in the stands. “I saw them, and I play too, but maybe Carlos is better suited than I am to talk about golf,” he said, drawing more than a few smiles from those present. “It’s a wonderful sport that shares some similarities with tennis; I play it, but I have a lot to improve on. Playing here, in front of champions like these who are watching and cheering, is truly fantastic.”
