The EuroLeague keeps going: as many as 24 teams will be in the starting lineup for the 2027–28 season

In recent days, there has been a great deal about the NBA Europe project. There are many offers and several clubs—especially brand-new ones—ready to invest astronomical sums to be part of the new project backed by the NBA and FIBA.
The EuroLeague wasted no time and, in response to NBA Europe, announced that starting with the 2027–28 season—which, at least on paper, will be the first to overlap with the NBA Europe project—the number of participating clubs will rise from the current 20 to 24.
This is a strong stance that confirms the EuroLeague has no intention of reaching an agreement with NBA Europe and, above all, that it believes it can continue to be the premier European tournament for basketball on the Old Continent.
Now it remains to be seen exactly how the four new teams will be added (there are rumors of wild cards and performance-based incentives tied to the EuroCup) and which teams will actually be part of the new 24-team format. What is certain is that the EuroLeague will not back down; on the contrary, it is determined to grow.
