Alessandro Del Piero rants after Bosnia-Italy: "There are those who just want to save their own…"

Italy is out of the World Cup for the third consecutive edition and even Alessandro Del Piero cannot contain his bitterness and frustration in an interview with Sky. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina has resigned, but for the former Juventus captain it is not enough, a total revolution of the soccer system in Italy is needed.
“We must not only touch the president of the federation, but also other situations – Del Piero explained. We have gaps compared to others in several areas, but be careful, this is a problem in Italian men’s soccer, while in women’s soccer and other sports it does not happen. This means that it is a specific thing and we have to understand what is happening in Italian men’s soccer,” Del Piero explained.
“We had the best Olympics ever, in tennis we are in the top 10 at the men’s and women’s level: the talent is there and it has focused in other sports where they have been able to rebuild. I don’t know how much soccer has this patience, time and courage to make certain choices but today there is a need to sit down and reflect.”
Del Piero is finally calling for real change: “I think there are aspects for which we need a complete team in all areas, that there is communication, unity of purpose and really the desire to represent something more than just saving our own asses.”
The Juventus legend points to the rebuilding done in other countries in times of crisis, as happened in Germany and France, as an example: “We need to take a step back and say that we are no longer the best and we are not what we think we know. Today, pride must be put aside and humility and study must be put in place.”
