George Russell won the Canadian Sprint Race, a test that serves as an appetizer to the Grand Prix in progranmma on Sunday at Montreal’s “Gilles Villeneuve” circuit. The British Mercedes driver was just over a second ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli’s other Mercedes, with whom he battled no holds barred during the short race.

Russell and Antonelli, by the way, risked contact several times, with the Bolognese even forced off the track to avoid jeopardizing the race for both after an unsuccessful overtaking attempt. An argument with the pit wall ensued: Antonelli repeatedly tried to call the attention of his engineer Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington and team principal Toto Wolff, but the latter urged him to calm down and reason about what had happened in private and not over the radio.

In fourth place came the other McLaren driven by Oscar Piastri, who beat the first of the two Ferraris, the one driven by Charles Leclerc, in a sprint. Sixth place, on the other hand, went to Lewis Hamilton, who also paid for a contact with the so-called “Wall of Champions” after the last chicane in the final laps, which actually cost him two positions.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) closed the points zone, while Franco Colapinto (Alpine) and Carlos Sainz (Williams) also appeared in the Top 10. They are followed to the checkered flag by Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Sergio Perez (Cadillac), Nico Hulkenberg (Audi), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Ollie Bearman (Haas), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac), Alex Albon (Williams) and Isack Hadjar (Red Bull), the latter slowed by engine problems.

Unclassified Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), who retired due to technical problems mid-race. In the overall standings Antonelli remains ahead of everyone with 106 points, Russell is second at 88.
