A New Contender for Marco Spissu

Napoli Basket continues its work in the transfer market with the goal of building an increasingly competitive team for next season. Among the names on the front office’s radar is Marco Spissu, identified as a potential key addition to the Italian contingent.

The former Zaragoza point guard, who recently parted ways with the Spanish club, represents a particularly intriguing option for the Neapolitan team. The Sardinian point guard is, in fact, considered one of the most reliable Italian players in his position, backed by extensive experience gained both internationally and in major European competitions.

His departure from Casademont Zaragoza is now official: the Aragonese club confirmed the split in a statement, highlighting the immense talent the Italian point guard displayed while wearing their jersey. Spissu leaves Spain after two intense seasons, culminating in a moment that has already gone down in the club’s history: the buzzer-beating three-pointer that secured Zaragoza’s survival in the Liga Endesa, at the end of an extremely difficult comeback that had also seen a coaching change, with Gonzalo García de Vitoria taking over for the dismissed Joan Plaza.

The path that led Spissu to Zaragoza was anything but straightforward. After his years with Dinamo Sassari, the point guard—born in 1995—had a troubled stint with Málaga, which was cut short almost immediately after he failed his medical exams, before joining Unics Kazan and then returning to Italy with Reyer Venezia in 2022. On June 21, 2024, he finally signed a two-year deal with Zaragoza, marking the beginning of the latest chapter in his career in Spain.

Spissu’s arrival would allow Napoli to bring more organization and quality to its offensive play, improving ball handling and the pace of the game. Added to this is the value of his personality, a quality that could provide leadership and clarity during the most critical moments of games.

Further evidence of Spissu’s value on the national and international stage is his consistent inclusion in the Italian national team’s rosters. The Sardinian point guard was also called up by head coach Luca Banchi for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, confirming his status as one of Italbasket’s key players in his position despite competition from other high-caliber players such as Mannion and Flaccadori.
