Serena Williams’ sensational return to the court at Wimbledon at age 44 was undoubtedly the top story in these early days of the London Grand Slam. The former world No. 1, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, was defeated in three sets by Maya Joint in the first round of the British tournament but showed she was still competitive despite a hiatus of more than four years.

The tennis legend left Center Court to the applause of fans, but what she did after the match drew criticism from journalists and industry insiders. Serena Williams, perhaps frustrated by the loss, decided to cancel her press conference, surprising everyone, including the tournament organizers.

Instead, Serena decided to issue a spontaneous statement before immediately leaving the sports complex: “It was truly fantastic to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here. The atmosphere was incredible. Stepping onto the court was fantastic. I really enjoyed the moment; I missed it, and I appreciated every second more than anything else.”

Her behavior drew criticism from many fans on social media and from journalists. Simon Cambers, president of the International Tennis Writers Association, was very critical: “I was impressed by how hard she fought on the court. I wasn’t impressed by the fact that she refused to hold her mandatory press conference. After receiving a wild card, this is unacceptable.”

“Tennis players also need to understand that this is part of their job. Tennis has gotten to where it is today thanks to the people who follow it, and if no one talked about it and no stories were written, no one would be passionate about this sport,” echoed José Moron, editor-in-chief of puntodebreak.
