After defeating Miomir Kecmanovic and Nuno Borges—ranked No. 50 and No. 48 in the ATP rankings, respectively—Jannik Sinner already knows who he’ll face on Friday in the third-round match: it will be American Jenson Brooksby, who is ten months older than the South Tyrolean and currently ranked No. 81 on the tour but who rose as high as No. 33 four years ago. In the first two rounds, Brooksby defeated Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(7), 6-1, 6-1 and Peruvian Ignacio Buse 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

Born in Sacramento, the capital of California, on October 26, 2000, Brooksby emerged on the ITF circuit when he was just over 18 years old, winning the tournaments in Bakersfield, Champaign, and Decatur in 2019. In the first of those tournaments, incidentally, he defeated Aleksandar Vukic. His move to the ATP Challenger level brought three more titles to his collection, all in 2021: Potchefstroom (his only title won outside the U.S., in South Africa), Orlando, and Tallahassee.

After moving up to the main tour, he lost three finals (Newport 2021, Dallas, and Atlanta 2022) before winning his first title in April 2025 on the clay courts of Houston. In between, he put in several impressive performances at Grand Slam events, with a fourth-round appearance at the 2021 US Open as his best result to date. Brooksby has also held his own at the Masters 1000 events, proving competitive especially at his “home” tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, where he reached the fourth round at both events in 2022.

In his career, Brooksby has defeated a Top 10 player twice: he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas (then ranked No. 5) at Indian Wells in 2022 and Casper Ruud (ranked No. 3 at the time) at the 2023 Australian Open. He has faced Italian players twice, both in 2025: a five-set loss to Flavio Cobolli at the US Open and a two-set victory over Luciano Darderi in Tokyo.
