Scaligera Basket Verona, newly promoted to Serie A, will be the new team for CJ Massinburg, a U.S. guard born in 1997 who played for Brescia last season. Massinburg was sought after by several top-tier teams; in the end, however, the Gialloblù club came out on top, officially announcing the deal on Thursday.

“Tezenis Verona is pleased to announce that it has signed a one-year contract with Christian Jalon ‘CJ’ Massinburg, a 196-centimeter American guard born in Dallas, Texas, on April 14, 1997,” reads the statement on the Venetian club’s website. The team has returned to the top flight after two years in the A2 league, thanks to its playoff run, during which it defeated Brindisi, Fortitudo Bologna, and Rimini in succession.

““I’m really happy to join an ambitious club like Tezenis Verona, in a historic city with fantastic fans,” Massinburg told his new club’s official channels. “From day one, I’ll bring my experience and skills to help the team stay in the league. A big hello to everyone, and see you soon.”

Scaligera head coach Alessandro Ramagli is also pleased with the signing: “Massinburg’s strengths lie in his versatility and solid play on both ends of the court. We need an athlete who can bring us stability, solidity, and experience in this league—aspects that are very important for a newly promoted team. He’s a player who knows Serie A very well; he’s coming off a challenging season in Brescia, but we’re confident he’ll bring us leadership and solidity.”
