Carlos Alcaraz: Another Withdrawal Confirmed; His Return Looks Less Likely

Carlos Alcaraz will not be available for Spain’s Davis Cup match against Chile, scheduled for September 19 and 20 in South America. The absence of Spain’s No. 1 player thus raises further questions about his condition ahead of the U.S. Open, which now seems increasingly like a pipe dream.

The Spanish tennis player is still recovering from the wrist injury he sustained last April in Barcelona, an injury that forced him to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon. The recovery process has proven to be longer and more complex than expected, and Alcaraz has chosen not to participate in the Masters 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati either, following a similar path to that taken by Jannik Sinner, whose presence in New York is also still uncertain.

Spanish captain David Ferrer has decided not to call him up for the away match against Chile, instead selecting Rafael Jodar, Daniel Merida, Jaume Munar, Martin Landaluce, and Pedro Martinez. This decision inevitably raises some doubts about the Spanish champion’s physical condition.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, continues to focus on his recovery. Yesterday he resumed training in Murcia, where he was joined by Holger Rune. His work on the court confirms his intention to gradually work toward a return, but it does not yet allow for a definite date to be set. A decision on his participation in the U.S. Open is expected shortly. His withdrawal from the Davis Cup is therefore another factor to monitor and makes the situation even more uncertain ahead of the tournament in New York.
