Davis Cup, Lorenzo Musetti struggles but not enough: Italy-United States 1-1
Taylor Fritz beats Lorenzo Musetti in two sets
After Lorenzo Sonego’s extraordinary victory over Frances Tiafoe, the Italian team engaged in the Davis Cup is forced to record a defeat in the second singles match against the United States, in the quarterfinals underway Thursday in Malaga: Taylor Fritz in fact beat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(8), 6-3, thus allowing the U.S. to even the score. To qualify for the semifinals, the doubles match therefore becomes decisive.
Musetti actually came close to winning the first set against the current No. 9 in the Atp rankings: Fritz, however, was good first to even the game count at 6-6 by also annulling a set point, and then to make null two other set points in the tiebreak, imposing himself in the decisive mini-set 10-8.
The Italian also showed himself more than competitive at the beginning of the second fraction, but at 2-2 he suffered the break of his opponent, who with a partial 4 games to 1 gave the point of the tie to the United States, leaving Musetti with only regrets.
