First joy for Africa: Senegal with a trio relaunches itself

Beaten 3-1 by hosts Qatar

Senegal folds Qatar 3-1 in the second match of World Cup Group A and bounces back after the opening knockout against the Netherlands. The Lions of the Teranga beat the host national team, now one step away from elimination, after an intense contest. It is the first win by an African national team at this World Cup.

In the first half great protests for the Qatari side over a penalty denied after an intervention by Sarr against Afif, but the Spaniard Lahoz shot straight. Before halftime Senegal took the lead through Salernitana striker Dia, who took advantage of a mistake by Khoukhi to find 1-0.

In the second half Senegal immediately hit the double in the 48th minute with a header by Diedhiou, Qatar did not give up and got back into the game by scoring the 2-1 goal with Muntari’s header, before Dieng’s final 3-1 that sealed the challenge in the 84th minute.

In the standings Senegal on 3 points with Holland and Ecuador on the pitch soon, Qatar on zero.
