The British centaur goes down flat: “21 weekend? Pilots are not very smart.”

Cal Crutchlow in an interview with Speedweek harshly commented on the 2023 MotoGp calendar, with 21 Grand Prix, all with a sprint race: Dorna hopes, by doubling the races, to recover the spectators lost this year between Valentino Rossi’s farewell and other vicissitudes. “I can’t imagine 21 race weekends. The riders still get the best treatment, but for everyone else it will be even worse. I would hate them: they will be like qualifying. Because in qualifying you do six laps, or eight, with laps in and laps out. For me personally it’s too much. It’s hard for the drivers and everybody who has a family. I personally think 18 Grand Prix is enough.”

Also a cause for discussion are the bonuses to be awarded to drivers for finishes in Sprint Races. “The riders are not particularly smart,” pressed the Yamaha test rider, “If you sign a contract, it’s better to do one contract per race. These ones, on the other hand, sign for a whole season. But now there are suddenly twice as many races…. It wouldn’t happen to me. I’ve always been smart in my career and made agreements in terms of the number of races because you never know what’s going to happen…. Maybe there is a need for decent managers in MotoGP.”
