Franco Chimenti ponders another feat
The queens of the European green are ready to compete in the Ladies Italian Open. At the 'Nazionale' in Sutri (Viterbo), the home of Italian golf, a spectacular competition will be held June 14-16, representing the penultimate qualifying tournament for the Paris Games. There will be 132 competitors, from 32 different nations. Among them, ten Italians (7 professionals and 3 amateurs), led by Italy’s No. 1 Alessandra Fanali.
"It will be weeks of great golf" said Federgolf president Franco Chimenti during the presentation press conference, which was also attended by IOC member Franco Carraro, Flavio Siniscalchi, head of the Department for Sport, and Diana Luna, the first Italian proette to participate in the Solheim Cup.
In addition, Chimenti expressed an ambitious wish for the future of golf at home: to bring the Solheim Cup, the prestigious women’s competition between Europe and the US, to Italy. "For some people it may seem crazy, just like they said when I proposed the Ryder Cup. Let's say that for the moment è a little more than an idea, let's see if it turns into a goal".
The Ladies Italian Open will be followed by the Men's Open in Cervia, Emilia-Romagna, thus promising a busy month of great golf in Italy.
