Roger Federer: “Sinner, Alcaraz and others… They will all do great things.”

Roger Federer, one step away from retirement from competitive tennis, said he is looking forward to seeing what the new generation of champions succeeding his and Nadal’s and Djokovic’s will accomplish: “Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz? They will be extraordinary, the most athletic ever,” the words reported by La Repubblica.

“Not only Alcaraz and Sinner, but also Zverev, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, everyone. The ones who move the best are also the best tennis players. That has been the case for the last 20 years and will be the case for a long time. I don’t think it’s going to move toward serve-and-volley tennis. It won’t happen because tennis players today don’t want to do that. It is easier to stay at the back of the court after the serve.”

“I have always loved full-court tennis,” Federer continued, “I have always loved my demi-volleys, my transition game. I learned it from the generation before me: Sampras, Henman … I understood that if you hit the ball by sending it more than a meter from the baseline, it’s a favor to the opponents, because they come at you.
