PGA Tour: Scheffler triumphs in Texas, Manassero is 45th

Total domination by Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 won the THE CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas, with 253 (61 63 66 63, -31) strokes equaling the lowest score, since 1983, in PGA Tour history. In his 139th start and at the age of 28 years, 10 months and 13 days, he celebrated his 14th feat on the top U.S. circuit.
At TPC Craig Ranch (par 71), Matteo Manassero with a total of 274 (66 71 70 67, -10) finished the tournament in 45th place. While Francesco Molinari, 101st with 140 (67 73, -2), exited at the cut.
“In this tournament I made my debut, as an amateur, on the PGA Tour. I always dreamed of playing it and now I even managed to win it. I am so happy to have won an event dedicated to Byron Nelson who was not only a golfing great, but a great person, a family man. I’m really proud,” Scheffler’s satisfaction.
Gold medalist at the Paris Games, 2024 FedEx Cup champion as well, Scheffler last December managed to make the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial PGA Tour tournament, his own for the second year in a row. Now, a new feat, allowing him to become the 72nd player in PGA Tour history to reach 14 wins. Only Sam Snead, in 1957 (10 strokes ahead of second), won THE CJ Cup Byron Nelson by a wider gap. With Scheffler edging out South African Erik Van Rooyen, 2nd with 261 (-23) by 8 strokes ahead of American Sam Stevens, 3rd with 264 (-20). This, for Scheffler, is the first exploit of 2025 and the second coming in front of a home crowd after the one signed in 2022 in the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. Now 2nd in the FedEx Cup, the Texan has been the world ranking leader for 103 consecutive weeks. That’s a total of 138 weeks as No. 1, again the third-longest streak of all time. The victory earned Scheffler $1,782,000 against a total prize pool of $9,900,000. With his compatriot Justin Thomas (in 2017 at the Sony Open) and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg (2023 in the RSM Classic) he shares the record for the lowest score, over 72 holes, in PGA Tour tournament history.
